Louise Sevel-Bates is the owner of a boutique-style studio called Pause Wellness in Nottingham Road. Coming from the branding and hospitality industries, she spent many years understanding the importance of how environments affect people’s feelings. She carried this approach with her when she opened Pause Wellness. The intention was to create an encouraging setting for anyone who walks through the door. “I’ve always believed that environments shape behaviour, and when a space feels welcoming and uplifting, it becomes much easier for people to prioritise their health,” Louise shared.

Louise’s journey as a woman in the wellness and fitness business has been shaped by cultivating longevity and wellness rather than performance. This is also what she brings to her business: accessible fitness modalities that suit women and men at any stage of life. One of the biggest lessons she’s learnt is that women are often much harder on themselves than they need to be. It’s about establishing a supportive routine and reducing the pressure to be “fit” and to find joy in movement again, whatever that looks like. “The goal is not perfection but consistency and kindness towards our bodies, and creating a community where people feel encouraged to keep showing up,” Louise said.

Louise is proud when she sees the progress and transformations in her clients. These are often subtle, but deeply meaningful, as she explained: “A woman who initially stands at the back of the class gradually moves forward. Someone who felt unsure begins to move with strength and ease.” She feels most inspired when she sees a woman realise she is doing this for herself, outside her demanding schedule. “When they carve out that hour for their own wellbeing, it can be incredibly rewarding,” Louise shared. The studio has recently expanded to offer a bespoke, wellness-focused retail range. Clients can purchase activewear, Pilates props such as balls and bands and other essential items for working out, like water bottles and sweat towels.

Louise and her team of qualified, experienced trainers continue to create a fitness facility that welcomes clients from all stages of life, whether they are healthy and strong or recovering from an injury. “Ultimately, Pause Wellness is about more than exercise. It’s about creating a space where people feel supported in taking care of themselves, building strength, and finding a sense of balance in their lives.”
